UHI Visit: Salmon and Aquaculture

P6 have been really busy lately! We had a super trip to the Newton Room at the UHI for a STEM workshop, entitled Salmon and Aquaculture.

We learned about the life cycle of the North Atlantic Salmon and the dangers / threats it faces at each stage of its journey. We loved the ‘migration game’ – where we all started of as alevin (baby salmon) but only 2 made it to the end of the game!

We were challenged to create (and test) fish food for salmon, in fish farms in Scotland. In our groups we worked together to decide on the best ingredients. This was dependent on many factors e.g. environmentally friendly and cost. We then pitched our product and company to the rest of the class!

Tim gave us a super day, which we will all remember! We hope you visit the UHI again for another workshop soon.
