We spent the week building up to our Fruity Friday! Inspired by one of our community visits, Ali from Juicyness, we wanted to explore fruit and make our own delicious contributions to the smoothie world!
In maths, we learned about sorting, collecting data and quantifying it with the use of tally marks. We sorted fruits into: colours, seed quantity or size, fruit size and if they were tree fruits or ground/bush fruits. All the category ideas came from the children. We found out who liked what kinds of fruits and used tally marks to help us see how many for each type of fruit. We also made personal likes and dislike boards so we knew what to add to Miss Carson’s smoothie shopping 🛒 list.
In writing, ✏️we learned about how to break down making a smoothie into steps that we could follow. We made ingredient and tools lists so we would have everything we needed. We wrote our How To Make a Smoothie recipe and instructions using pictures and words.
Over the week we got more and more excited about Fruity Friday (Smoothie Day!) and when the day arrived we were ready to make! We did this hygienically and safely over the whole of Friday. In groups we made our bespoke smoothies. We cleaned, sorted and chopped the fruit 🍌 and then assembled the smoothies according to our tastes! Some children even tried fruits they hadn’t tried or wanted to try to make sure. Mango 🥭 was a fruit that divided opinions but upon trying it, some children wanted more! We had a couple of avocado 🥑 and pineapple 🍍 converts too! We described the fruit using our senses as we tasted and made our smoothies. Then the children were delighted to press the magic button that blended our concoctions.
The children (mostly) loved their smoothies and ended up trying each others! Many wanted seconds and third helpings! Over the day we were helped by our wonderful PSA’s. Thank you so much for helping us!
We did lots of other learning this week too but the smoothies were definitely the highlight!
Enjoy your weekend everyone!
