WOW! It’s hard to believe that’s another week done and dusted in P1! The weeks are whizzing and what fun we have been having. Here is a ‘Snap Shot’ of Week 3.
IDL
This week for our topic ‘Marvellous me’ we have been discussing our likes and dislikes. We discussed how everyone has different opinions and this is what makes us unique and special. 🙂 We introduced the describing bubble to the P1’s. This helps the children think about 7 areas when describing- texture, number, position, size, shape, colour and doing. We were modelling and then encouraging the P1s to use describing words when talking about their likes and dislikes. Eg I like strawberries because they are juicy, sweet and red. They feel bumpy and a bit squishy. I like broccoli because it is green and crunchy. It looks like tall bushy trees.
Literacy
It has been a very exciting week. We have started our sound journey. In P1 we will be introducing the children to new sounds. We share the letter name with the children but our focus is learning the letter sounds as this helps when learning to read. This week the children have been exposed to the sounds s and a. We have sung the jolly phonics songs, learned the actions to these sounds and also had the opportunity to taste, smell and sort items that start with these sounds. The children have loved these experiences and been very engaged.
We have also started to introduce the children to the Oxford Reading Tree characters. This week the children were introduced to Kipper, Biff and Chip. Please ask your child if they can tell you some information about these characters. How old are they? What is Kipper’s real name? What is special about Biff and Chip? What does Kipper like doing?
Making links with our IDL topic for writing the children drew themselves with something they like and something they dislike. We then scribed as the children shared their descriptions of their pictures.
Numeracy
Through short carpet sessions we have focused on the numbers 0 to 4 this week. We have looked at identification of the number, introduction to the formation and also understanding the value of these amounts. This has been done through lots of singing and play activities. When looking at the number 2 we focused on introducing the term pairs so that children can begin to make this link. For the number 3 links were made to the story Goldilocks and the 3 bears- 3 chairs, 3 beds etc. We have also been continuing with our mental maths practising counting forwards and backwards from given numbers, not always starting at one or zero. The children have been introduced to number fans and rekenreks. On the rekenreks ( wooden beads) we have been asking the children to count out given amounts.
Other Areas of Learning
The children have loved going to the gym hall. We have been focusing on team and parachute games. 🙂 Next week we are going to attempt to change into our PE kits. Wish us luck!
On a Thursday the children enjoy exploring the library. They get the opportunity to look at different books and discuss what they see in the pictures.
Additional Information
“Wow moments” sheets and information were issued on Tuesday. We love to hear and celebrate the children’s achievements out of school. For this term these will be shared in class on a Tuesday.
The class have named our cuddly dinosaur Steggy. They are very excited that he will be joining different children each week at home to experience a few days in their care. Over the course of P1 they will all get a turn.
Thank you to those of you who already have a P.E kit in school. If you have not yet done so, please bring in a named P.E kit. These will be kept in school until the end term.
Finally PLEASE could we ask that all items belonging to your children are named. We have a selection of jumpers in the class- with no names ☹️ It makes it difficult at the end of the day to return clothing if it is not named.

Have a lovely weekend 🙂
Mrs Howitt and Mrs Meade.
