Happy Holidays

What a quick first term we have had in Primary 1. We have been blown away with how well the children have settled into new routines and made new friendships. They bring smiles to us daily with their enthusiasm, creativity and excitement to learn. Well done P1!

Literacy

For literacy this week we have continued to focus on the sounds s a t p i n. The children are becoming more confident at recognising these sounds and some are beginning to put the sounds together to make words. It’s so encouraging to hear the children spotting the sounds they know in their names and on displays in the room etc. In Term 2 new sounds will be introduced to the children. These will be sent home to add to their reading tubs. We have been looking at wordless books this week in class. It has been fantastic to hear the children tell the story using only the pictures.

In class as part of our IDL we have been discussing what our strengths and goals are. The children were trying to think of ideas for both school and home. We had some fantastic strengths and goals shared. ” I would like to learn to ride my bike without stabilisers” ” I want to learn more sounds” ” I help my Mum and my brother in the house” “I want to learn to do a front flip” These are just a few of the ideas shared.

Numeracy

For number this week we have introduced the numbers 16- 20. We have tried to recognise, sequence and make these numbers. We have used number fans, counting beads and sequencing cards also. The children are enjoying consolidating their learning by playing number games on the chromebooks. This is also very good for their fine motor skills.

Additional infomation

We were very fortunate to have Jennifer in Inshes this week running a Kapla workshop. P1 were the first class to attend. They all listened carefully and fully engaged and participated. They had to create small houses using the wooden blocks and then small groups of children were asked to create rivers, paths and trees. It was a brilliant session. Some of the children were so inspired they came back to class and chose to make their own houses and shops from the Kapla.

As today is World Smile Day the children all drew 2 pictures. They gave one to their P7 buddy and one to an adult within the school to bring a smile to their face. They all really loved this activity.

To celebrate a fantastic first term the class had a cinema afternoon, watching The Highway Rat.

We hope you all have the most amazing holiday and we are looking forward to seeing you all back in school on Monday the 23rd of October.
