Another busy week completed in P1.
Literacy:
For phonics this week we introduced the sounds u and o. The children’s confidence is growing daily as we work on our recognition of the sounds and our blending skills. We encourage the children to be able to say, hear and recognise the sounds that have been taught. We use magnetic letters, letter tiles, whiteboards and games to help reinforce the learning. On Monday the children used pom poms in paint to create beautiful UMBRELLAS and on Thursday the children made an OCTOPUS using milk bottle tops in paint to print. We are continuing to introduce a new wordless book to the children each week. Their ability to use the pictures to retell the story is really coming on. We are both so proud of them. For writing we are continuing to focus on description. The children had to choose one of the 3 houses from the 3 Little Pigs and describe it. We had some fantastic descriptions- eg The house has a triangle roof. It has 1000 big red bricks. It is so strong. The house has 4 grey windows. The children are also putting a lot more thought and detail into their drawings ensuring they match their descriptions.
In numeracy we are continuing to look at number in mental maths. Looking at 1 less and 1 more. To support the children with this we use number lines and 100 squares. We have also moved on to look at 2D shapes. The children are loving creating pictures and patterns from the shapes introduced. Below are a few of the children’s shape monsters. We have focused on the features of a circle, square, triangle and rectangle. They have ventured outside to draw the shapes and have also been shape detectives in the class seeing what shapes they can recongise in the room.
We have started to practice for our Christmas Nativity. Check school bags as today we will issue a letter regarding costumes and parts. It is all very exciting. 🌲
In gym we are continuing to work on gymnstics. This week we had the benches and mats out. The children were shown lots of different ways that they could move along the bench. eg bunny hops, slithering, hopping, walking whilst pointing our toes. We practiced our jumps when leaving the bench. We are crossing our fingers that on Monday we can get the climbing frame out.
