This week our big focus in numeracy was numbers before, after and between! Between was something we needed to revise and strengthen our understanding of. We extended the idea of before and after by looking at not just one number before or after but 2,3,4 or even 9 numbers before or after! We use our number lines or squares to help us with this.
On Monday, we had some special visitors from P3/4 during P2 Buddy Time. It was lovely for me as a teacher to see my former P1 pupils coming back to share their learning. It is amazing to see their progress and confidence shine over time! They came to show us how to play two games to support our learning of basic facts. They were so great at coaching us through that the P2s then shared one game with the P1s. Next week we’ll share the other one with them.
In literacy, we continue to do a little writing during every reading session. We are focusing on writing words using the sounds and patterns we learn. We continue to learn to write sentences and common/tricky words independently.
I was delighted to have the class for gym on Thursday afternoon (usually Miss Corcoran’s time) and take out the gymnastic apparatus and mats. This was an exploring session to see where the P2s are with their skills and allow the P1s to try out the equipment. It was fun!
I went for a rummage in the school cupboards and found some new things for us to use in playful learning. We now have some Kapla in various colours, Kapla books, draughts boards, and new mobilo! The children were so excited to use these new things in their play.
This week we also explored the importance of hearing the children’s views as part of our right to be listened to and taken seriously (Article 12) and as part of the Our Voice Matters campaign for Children’s Mental Health Week. We will continue to learn about these throughout the month.
It was Safer Internet Day on Tuesday and this launches our learning about Article 17: We have the right to access information as long as it’s safe. This week we discussed and drew our favourite games and talked about how we accessed and played them. We hope to share all our learning on accessing appropriate information and staying safe next month!
