Literacy
In literacy we continued to introduce double sounds. This week we introduced the sounds oa and ai. Our tricky word of the week is ‘was’. On Monday we worked with our P7 buddies to create our own mixed up fairy tales. The children had some fantastic ideas for stories.

Numeracy
In numeracy we have had look at estimating. This is a really tricky concept for the children as they naturally want to count so that they can get the right answer. We discussed which pile looks like it’s got more/ less. We also looked to see if we could spot patterns to help us estimate…. eg if 2 piles of 3 we knew it was 6 as 3+3 is 6
Jobs in the community
We have been so lucky this week to welcome 3 parents into our classroom. On Tuesday we welcomed Elly’s mum into the class. She is a midwife. The children were really intrested to hear why they have belly buttons and also got the opportunity to have a go of measuring a toy babies head. They watched a short video which showed how a baby develops over the course of the 40 weeks in their mummy’s tummy. They were amazed to see how the different body parts grow and how the heart functions etc inside the mummy’s tummy.

This morning we welcomed Penelope’s mum. She is a pharmacist. The children learnt about the importance of safety around medicines and that they should only take medicine if they are given it by a grown up. We talked about why medicines have different flavours and what happens when your medicne runs out. We also found out were medicines are made and where to get them from.

This afternoon we welcomed Casey’s Dad into the class. He is an electrician. He had prepared mini circuits for the children to explore. They were all very excited to test out the circuits and make the lights and sirens switch on. He also showed the children what a cable looks like when it is stripped back. A few of the children helped him to connect the cable to a switch.

We are so grateful to all our visitors so far for giving up their time to join us in P1🙂 Thank you.
Continuing our topic, on Monday we are venturing out to Inshes Church. Please remember to send coats. We are getting a tour of the church and the children will have the opportunity to ask Mr Scott about his job as a minister.
On Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day. The children can come to school in their Pjs, comfy clothes or dressed as their favourite book character. It will be a lovely relaxed day where we explore stories and hopefully have lots of fun. Please feel free to send your child in with their favourite book to share with the class.
Attached are some of the creative play we have had this week… I think you’ll agree we have an amazing bunch in P1 with such great imaginations🙂

Have a lovely weekend. Here’s hoping the sun continues to shine. We finished our afternoon by having a play in the small playground. A lovely way to end a super week. Well done Superstars.
