Welcome to P1B!

A lot can happen in P1 in just a few weeks!

The children have been incredibly busy over the past 3 weeks. Making the transition from nursery to P1 and learning new routines is a considerable achievement!

In literacy, we have been learning the letters and sounds for L,S and A. We learn both the upper and lower case letters and we learn the name and sound of the letter. We learn the sounds so that the children can hear them when they begin to read. Look out for an introductory video that we will post soon! The children have loved learning the sounds and have really taken to writing the letters. It was wonderful to watch their faces so full of concentration and determination! We ensure the children are given time to practice and take in what they are being taught. They get opportunities to do this through play and adult led activities. The children really enjoyed a sound scavenger hunt with their P7 buddies outside in the garden.

On Friday, we had a little picnic in class. We tasted some s s strawberries 🍓 and a a apples 🍎. We talked about the yummy flavours and textures and tried our best to describe what we were eating. Some children said, “squishy strawberries”, “sweet”, “crunchy” and “slippery”.

In maths, we have been learning about patterns. The children have shown impressive skills by being able to identify what is happening in different patterns. They have also been having a go at making their own patterns and have been able to describe them to us. In numeracy, we have been learning all about the numbers 1, 2 and 3. In addition to learning to recognise the numbers, we are looking at what each number signifies e.g. what 1 as a quantity looks like and how this can be represented. We are also learning to form the numbers correctly. We sing number songs daily and the children love to dance along to the number songs!

In class we have different areas for the children to play, where they are developing and strengthening many skills! A new favourite with the children is the crafting and junk modelling area. The children have been developing confidence and independence with their fine motor skills through: cutting, bending, folding and navigating the sticky tape! They are also learning to bring their ideas to life and work through problems.

It has been so lovely getting to know all the children over the past 3 weeks! Many of them like to talk about their interests and activities from home. If your child would like to share any achievements from home with the class, we would be happy to hear about them. If you want to send something in with them to share e.g. photos, medals, 🥇 etc please do!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Miss Carson 😀
