Wowee! It’s the end of Term 1 of P1! What an amazing term it’s been and what a lot of progress the children have made! They are a settled, fun and happy bunch. I’ve had such a great time getting to know them all. They truly are a fabulous class!
This week we explored the UNCRC Rights of the Child. We learned that children have 42 Rights that are to be protected by our government. We learned that the adults in school our the duty bearers and need to make sure that each child’s rights are being respected and protected. We watched the first half of a wonderful video made by UNICEF called, “We all have Rights.” In this video there are characters who find out about some of the different rights. The children were very interested to hear that their voices and opinions are important and that adults need to listen to them. You may have heard a little about this at home! We did add that we need to respect others and not hurt them when we do speak. We have focused on two rights this week, Article 7: The Right to a Name (and Nationality) and Article 31: The Right to Play, Rest and Relax. We discussed our names and what we liked to be called. Some children voiced that they use a different name to their birth name e.g. a shortened version of their name or nickname. The children also voiced their thoughts on nicknames. The children were delighted to hear that they have a right to play! We have begun creating a Rights display in the classroom and we will talk about our rights through different aspects of the school day.

During our gymnastics session with P1A, we took groups of children to teach 3 of the foundational shapes in gymnastics. We have learned the straight, tucked, and dish shapes. The trickiest one was the dish shape as we need to hold our abdominal core for this. We had lots of fun giving it a go! When the groups are practising these skills, the rest of the children can practice a variety of skills such as balance, rolling, and strength on the gymnastic equipment. They love it!!

This week in maths we have been exploring numbers and ordering and comparing them. We used our Cuisenaire rods again to aid us. The children showed great observation skills and had different ways of explaining how each rod compares to the other. After watching a super episode of Numberblocks called, ‘Stampolines’ we had such a fun time considering how to make numbers in different ways. We made our own stampoline pictures by looking at the shapes we could make with connecting cubes for a specific number then tried to replicate it in our painting. The children loved splatting the foam cubes in the paint and onto the paper! On Friday afternoon during our P7 buddy session, we used the connecting cubes again to help us to show numbers in different ways!

In writing this week, we returned to drawing figures and adding detail. The children drew pictures of their P7 buddies. They told us what they liked about them and were able to use describing words to tell us about their appearance. On Friday during ‘Buddies’ the children shared their writing with their buddies. The P7s were really taken by the nice things said about them and they loved the detail in the drawings! A lovely moment.

Across the week we have been revising phonics and have had more mini teachers! We’ve also been working with rhyme, blending, auditory discrimination and word boundaries.

On Wednesday, we spent the day thinking about our families. We had read from the book, “The Big Book of Families” and were very excited to learn that there are lots of kinds of different families. We then talked about our own families and made some lovely pictures of them. We have hung up our pictures alongside the family photos provided by you. Thanks very much for sending them in. If any children have missed this activity due to absence, we will give them the chance to do it on their return. ❤️

In our child initiated play sessions, the children have been busy exploring many things! Some of the children began using the ‘Mobilo’ which led to some brilliant discussions on weight distribution and counter balance! Amazing! It was also lovely to hear some new musical compositoons with some creative use of found objects.

On Friday, we said good bye to Susan our Head Cook. The children made a lovely card with lots of lovely pictures telling Susan lovely things about her and her food. We wish her the of best luck in her new post!

At the end of Friday we had a wee biscuit and chat time. I told all the children just how proud I am of them and what an enjoyable term it’s been with them. We took some silly selfies. Thanks P1B!

Have a great holiday everyone!
Miss Carson 😊
