Welcome back everyone! It was great to see everyone back this week and to hear what people had been up to over the holiday period.
As always we’ve had an action packed week in P1A.
This week as part of our phonics we revised the sounds that we’d learnt last term and lots of us are beginning to be able to use these sounds to read words. This is an exciting moment for our young learners! We also introduced our new sound /h/ which fitted well with the holidays and Halloween!
As it was Halloween this week, we also used this as a stimulus for our drawing and writing where we drew a picture of ourselves in our costumes and then shared sentences to describe ourselves. It’s brilliant to see how much more detail the children’s pictures have since the start of term. We also got creative and designed our own Halloween hats!
In maths this week we’ve been learning more about how to decompose (break up) and compose (put together) numbers using other numbers. We’ve used the language whole and part and focused on the different ways to make 5 and the patterns we can spot to work out all the combinations. There were some great discussions and pattern spotting.
More groups have been supported to learn how to make playdough and the children have been absolutely loving this! There has been lots of play and exploration with this afterwards and we’ve now had a chance to compare it to cloud dough too!
Some children decided they wanted to make a bubble wand and there was lots of experimentation around the type of material that needed to be used and the consistency of the bubble mixture. After lots of trial and error, I think you’ll agree some pretty impressive bubbles were made. The best material seemed to be a thicker plastic yogurt pot.
The ice-cream shop also took off this week and has extended to menus, an ordering system and even more flavours than before. A few other cafes and restaurants seem to have emerged too. We’re quite the culinary class! The construction area has been a firm favourite as always with habitats for animals being constructed and some trying to make designs from the Kapla books too. There’s been lots going on in the mark making area as well!
