Reading at home

Please see below for a letter that should come home with your child but we are adding it here to so it’s easier to access the website links we’ve included.

Many thanks,

Dear Parent/Carer,

As we have started to read books now at school, to put our sound knowledge into action, you can support this at home by spending time together as your child reads.

If you want access to some free books that use the sounds that we have been learning then you are free to access the following resources from this website https://speldsa.org.au/pages/speld-sa-phonic-books-jp

You may use any books in Set 1. You may choose between the one star set or the two star set or read both. Which one is appropriate will depend on your child’s current reading experience and confidence. Your child may have read some of these books in school already. Reading books multiple times can help with their confidence and fluency. The books contain instructions about practising sounds, reading words and then give some questions to ask at the end to support comprehension.

In each book, your child will have the opportunity to practise a group of sounds they’ve been taught and practise blending these sounds together to read words. When reading with your child, encourage them to use the correct sound e.g. /ssss/ not /suh/. If they add an ‘uh’ at the end, it makes blending very difficult. Your child may need to read the sounds several times before they are able to read the word. If you want a reminder about how to say the sounds and how to support your child to blend then check the blogs for previous videos we’ve posted.

Please do not go onto the Set 2 books yet as we are still reading some of these in class.

Many thanks,

P1 Team
