Literacy
We learned the Xx letter and sound this week. We enjoyed making our most recent learned letters using our body in “Whole Body Formation!” Can you guess what letters we made from our photos?
The children continue to work hard on their blending skills in reading and segmenting skills in writing. The children’s confidence and skills progress every day! Our Drawing Club text was, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ The children learned new vocabulary and actions. I’ve loved hearing them use the words we’ve introduced them to in their day to day conversations and when talking about the books. The children drew super detailed pictures of the bear and different settings. On Thursday, the children used their imaginations to take them on an adventure. A magic tunnel appeared in the story which took the bear and family to a new place! The children’s new settings were marvellously magical. They thought that the tunnel took them to… a jungle, outer space, Super Mario World, Barbie World, our own school, Book World and more exciting places! Their drawings and ideas were so great to listen to and talk about. On Friday, they chose their favourite setting in the book to describe and write about.
Maths
In numeracy this week we have been adding to our learning about the numbers between 12 and 20. The children have been challenged with making these numbers using ‘counters’ and tens frames. To help them explore the numbers deeply and to promote further understanding, they have also made greater numbers, numbers that they are often confused with e.g. 12 and 21. We have explored and discussed with the children what is the same and different about these numbers.
Allowing the children to lead with their observations, has helped them to understand that the 1 in 12 stands for 10 not 1. So that they know that 12 is actually 10 and 2. The children have been working with Maths Partners to help them learn to work collaboratively. It is great to see a little progress each time with the children’s ability to work together!
We are also doing lots of oral and practical counting practice with counting forward and backwards within 20 and beyond! It was great to hear from a few children in our discussions, “I like maths.” “Yeah me too!” “I like counting.” I love hearing positive attitudes about maths!
In the afternoon on World Book Day, the children got together to go on a Bear Hunt with the other P1s. They had to find the pictures of the settings from the book and discover the numbers on the back of these. Then they had to make these numbers on the tens frames. They had a lot of fun together!
On Friday, the children played dominos with their P7 Buddies.
Play
Amongst all the fascinating play this week, a highlight was going outside with our ‘frying pans’ and ‘pancakes’ to flip our pancakes on Pancake Day! The children absolutely loved this activity where they excitedly showed off their flipping techniques! I noticed lots of progress in their confidence and hand eye coordination skills!
Achievements & Extreme Reading!
Oliver was so excited to share his Karate certificate with us! He told us about getting his white/red belt! Well done Oliver! 👏🌟Marcie shared her Extreme Reading photo challenge with us and it was also shared at the World Book Day assembly! Marcie was reading while practising her Judo moves! Brilliant Marcie! 🌟 👏
