Week beginning 10.3.25

Another busy week under our belts in Primary 1. 🤩

This week the children were introduced to the sound y. They learned what it sounds like, looks like and also how to form it. We also introduced 3 new common words- by my and cry.

Drawing Club this week was based around Julia Donaldson’s book- The Girl, the Bear and the Magic Shoes. Please see the attached sheet for the vocabulary that was introduced. The children are so enthusiastic about learning these new words accompanied by the actions. On Monday the children had to draw their favourite pair of shoes from the story and on Thursday they had to come up with their own design for a pair of shoes and describe them. We had some fantastic shoes- football boots, high heels and some skis! The children were very creative and it was lovely to see their own interests and likes shine through from this.

Our highlight of the week has got to be our class trip to Drakies Primary and Inshes Park. The children have come back with loads of fresh ideas and inspiration about how we could improve our outdoor space. Watch the space for our plans!!

This week we have introduced the concept of money to the class. We started off by discussing what we need money for and the different ways people can pay for things in shops. Eg- cards, phones, coins and notes. Before introducing coins to the class they were introduced to tokens. The tokens had the value of 1, 2 ,5 and 10. Through using the tokens the children got to experience making different amounts. Eg 2 2 and 1 makes 5 as does 1 1 1 1 and 1. Once they had been exposed to this idea real coins were introduced. On Friday the children used real 1p coins to make the amounts 1p, 2p 5p and 10p. Next week they will have experience of working with 2p’s 5ps, 10p 20ps and 50ps. Alongside learning about money then children have been working together to solve word problems.

With our P7 buddies on Friday the children played a choice of 3 different games. All 3 games promoted dice recognition, counting and turn taking 😊

On Wednesday we were learning about potatoes. We were learning that there are different types of potatoes and we talked about when and how we will plant them.
