This week was a favourite for many. The children showed a new appreciation for the woods after learning about the devastating wildfire over the weekend. Fortunately the area where we have been going every Monday had not been affected by the fire.
We learned about the different calls that birds make and tried to distinguish between the different birds we could hear in the woods. Do you know that you every type of bird has a different song and we can identify them from their sound?
We learned about the different types of owls found in Scotland and what they eat. To do this, we were tasked with dissecting owl pellets – one group discovered (from the skeletons) that one owl had had a feast of 9 shrews!
To bring our morning to a close, we created bird feeders from apples and seeds and hung them on a branch for the birds to enjoy when we left the woods.
