What a busy week we’ve had in P1! Our main learning focus this week was our Key Assessment Tasks (KATs) which will be shared with you soon! The main excitement for the children was the snow and the Open Afternoons!
With such cold weather this week, it was lovely to see the children enjoy themselves by building snowmen ⛄️ and having all kinds of fun in the snow! ❄️ You can look at the news page for photos of all the children in school playing. Thank you for dressing them so well in their warm and waterproof clothing! This really helps them get the most out of outdoor play. Even with all these cold weather precautions we’ve had lots of wet feet and soggy socks. 🧦 If you could please continue to put a selection of spare clothes in their bags that includes socks and underwear that would be helpful. I gave out the last pair of P1 sized ‘school socks’ on Friday. If you have any of the school socks I would be grateful for their return so we can help keep little feet warm and dry. ☺️
In maths, we have been hard at work with our KAT. The children have been challenged to build structures (of their choosing) with a limited supply of 3D shapes. I have been observing each child select their materials, discuss their usefulness and build things they find interesting, while taking notes on the mathematical language they use. A large part of the task was also being able to collaborate with a partner, taking onboard someone else’s ideas and thus having some flexibility in how the model would turn out. On Friday, after finishing making their models, the children then drew their models and individually discussed their process and shapes used! We will hopefully finish this drawing/writing part of the task on Monday. Here are some sneak peeks of their tasks!
In phonics, we learned the sound /ck/ and the corresponding letters. The children were interested to find out that the letters /C/c/, /K/k and the digraph /ck/ can all make the same sound! We learned two songs, one for ‘curly c’ and one for ‘kicking k’. I’ll attach the videos if you would like to practise singing them.
In gym, the children used their knowledge and skill of the gymnastic shapes to put together some short sequences. Sorry but I don’t have photos of gym this week! I’ll add some next week! ☺️
As this week we were celebrating Scottish Book Week, we were lucky to have a visit from author and illustrator Corrina Campbell! Corrina came along to read us her book, “The Girl who Stole the Stars”, and to teach us about being an author and illustrator.

Thank you for coming to our Open Afternoons this week. The children were so pleased to see you to share their learning and take you to the cafe! I hope you enjoyed seeing their progress in the blue folders, their art and latest writing displayed on the walls. Hopefully it was a positive insight into what goes on in P1! Thank you for taking home the Bookbug Book packs. We have some left for those who were absent. I’ll send those home when the children are back.
In play, I have been delighted to see the children trying to write using the sounds/letters they know and using their own marks too! I’ve loved experiencing their confidence and joy when sharing their writing. Some children even wrote and illustrated their own books! I’ve noticed that the children are taking more notice of the number and letter displays in the class and adding written elements to their play. I’m excited to see how this develops.
I also changed our room a bit by swapping the home corner with the calm corner to make a larger area for books, reading and relaxing! The children really took to this new set up!
We also had some lovely visits from P2/3 wanting to share the winter clothes that they made for their class mascot Scout! Our siblings enjoyed having their brothers and sisters in class!
