It’s been a very festive week this week!
We hope you all enjoyed attending the Early Years Christmas performance. We thought the children did a marvellous job learning the words and actions to the songs. They had practised very hard in school. It’s no mean feat learning the verses and chorus to four songs.
Continuing the festive theme, we also had lots of fun at the Christmas lunch and making Christmas related crafts in class including the calendars we took home. The calendars link well with the work we’ve been doing on time recently in maths. We’ve been exploring days of the week and learning the Makaton signs for these too and started to look at how to read calendars. We also looked at our daily routines and what we do at different times of the day. As part of this, we’ve been learning how to read times that are exactly on the hour and have been learning what o’clock looks like on both analogue and digital clocks. You can help at home by discussing days of the week, o’clock times and different places you’ll be able to read the time (watch, phone, TV, microwave, oven, car).
Our play has taken us in lots of exciting new directions. Our junk modelling has taken on a whole new dimension as we’ve gone a lot larger. We’ve had robots and suits of armour this week. Lots of children also started making boats and paper aeroplanes which linked nicely to our work on shapes and has also stimulated lots of discussion and experimentation with floating and sinking.
We are doing brilliantly with our reading and are getting very confident with the sounds we’ve learnt so far l, s, a, t, p, i, n, h, o, m, d, g, c, k, ck and are now trying hard to remember our new sounds which were introduced over the last two week e, u, r and b. We’re getting really good at reading words too and lots of us have started reading books and a few have had a go at writing sentences.

As part of our work on Zones of Regulation, we’ve been exploring expected and unexpected behaviours and how these make us feel. We’ve also been exploring how our feelings change in different situations and how our actions and behaviours can impact others.
It’s been wonderful seeing how the children have developed this term during our weekly library sessions. There are lots of children enjoying books on their own or with a friend and discussing the stories or pictures they’re seeing. One of my favourite moments this week was seeing one child read to another by looking at the pictures and creating/telling a story based on these pictures. Both children seemed to be really enjoying the moment and the creativity and imagination being developed was lovely!
