Week beginning 3.3.25

It’s lovely to be back online and able to share our weekly updates with you all. We have had another very fun and busy week in Primary 1. We are delighted to welcome Miss Thomson to join our Primary 1 team for the next 8 weeks as she embarks on her final teaching placement. 🤩

This week’s highlights….

On Tuesday we had great fun making our very own pancakes. The children had to follow step by step instructions and measure out all the ingredients. They loved getting the opportunity to mix the ingredients and flip the cooked pancakes. They perfected their spreading skills as they chose from a choice of toppings. In the afternoon the class worked on developing their understanding of sharing in equal amounts. There was a certain amount of pancakes left over but not enough for one each. Through discussion the class talked about halving and quartering the pancakes to ensure those who wished to have more pancakes got an equal share.

World Book Day 📘📚

On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day. We started the day by visiting the library for a story. Following this we carried out Day two of this weeks Drawing  Club. For Drawing Club we have focused on the story – We’re going on a Bear Hunt. For Thursdays adventure the children had to use their imaginations to think of a new setting that the Bear and the family could visit … They ran through a magic tunnel and arrived at a …. We had some of the most fantastic suggestions – a jungle, train station, swimming pool etc. Throughout the day there was 2  tannoys signaling for all classes to drop everything and read. The children were read the story- Giraffe’s Can’t Dance and The Seesaw. In the afternoon we took part in a quiz where certain staff members had recorded themselves reading part of a story. Their faces were covered and the children had to guess the different members of staff from their voices. The final activity we did  on Thursday was we teamed up with P1B for a We’re going on a Bear Hunt scavenger hunt outside. It was lovely to see the two classes mixing and having fun in the fresh air whilst displaying excellent team work.

In preparation for next week’s trip to Drakies Primary we went to explore what resources and space we have here at Inshes. Hopefully after seeing the resources we have and through the inspiration of seeing another setting the children will be able to help us plan improvements to our own small playground to make it a better space for outdoor learning.

In numeracy this week we have been learning about the numbers 15, 16,17, 18, 19 and 20. The children have been making these numbers but have also been comparing them to other  numbers that they are often confused within eg 15 and 51. We have discussed with the children what is the same and different about these numbers. It has helped the children to understand that the 1 in 15 stands for 10 not 1. We have been using the language 15 is 10 and 5. We have also continued with our weekly counting collections sessions. The children are finding it easier each week to make joint decisions with their partner and it is great to listen to their discussions as they talk about which tool to use to aid their counting and how to use it. Do they sort by colour, use the tool to help them organise their materials etc.

With our P7 buddies this week we have been working on our abilities to take turns and also to recognise dice patterns at speed through playing dominoes. It was great to see the Primary  1s confidence grow as they played the game a few times.

Through the continuous play provision the children are continuing to develop many skills. Their problem solving, confidence, team work, creativey and ability to resolve conflicts.
